Tocantins: This is a fairly new state created in 1988 being carved from the State of Goias. This is a northern Brazilian State bounded to its west by the State of Para. The City of Palmas which is les than two decades old is the State’s Capital. The current Governor is Marcelo Miranda. The State derives its name from the Tocantins River
Economy:
The Tocantins economy depends mainly on agriculture (which produces pineapple for local consumption and export) and livestock raring. A hydro-electricity generating dam (the Tucurui) was recently completed at a cost of almost $10 million dollars aimed at resolving energy problems within the State.
Tourism in Tocantins:
The tourism industry within the State is still in its infant stages. The City of Palmas is the main place to visit, though it lacks much in terms of history and culture since it was established in 1990. It has a population of about 200,000 residents and is a marvel of modern town planning at work, with a well designed road network, transport system and residential areas.
